Long Clawson boy earns award and promotion with Nottingham Sabres

YOUNG ice hockey talent William Wigley has been rewarded for an excellent season with a top award from his club.

William, known to his friends as Billy Wig, has enjoyed a successful season as captain of the Nottingham Sabres under 10s, leading them to second place in their league and missing the title by just two points.

The nine-year-old from Long Clawson also led the Sabres in a tournament in Coventry where they won all of their games and brought the Godiva Cup back to Nottingham.

William, who plays in defence, said: “I was very pleased with the way the team played and the hard work everyone put in.”

Last weekend, William attended the Sabres presentation night barbecue and delighted parents Simon and Nichola by winning his team’s most valuable player trophy.

Next season will be his last at under 10s level and following trials, William was promoted up to the Nottingham Pumas where he will develop his skills for under 12s ice hockey.

Simon said: “We are very proud of Billy for his attitude towards his ice hockey. He trains twice a week and although it can be very exhausting for him he always looks forward to the next time and meeting up with his other team-mates.”
