Hamilton Tennis Club's second mixed team of Doug Hacking and Margaret Roskell, Andy Stevens and Penny Hallam, and Ciaran Boylan with Margaret Shufflebotham kept their promotion hopes alive with an 8-1 win against Houghton Firsts.

With only a few points separating the top four ahead of the final round, the remaining match against Oadby Granville Seconds will be crucial.

Already missing top player Craig Tracey, the team of Graham Hall and Sue Harrison, Barrie Farnsworth and Jude Plumb, and Nathan Morgans with Cindy Coulter lost 8-1.

The defeat was exacerbated by an injury sustained during the match to Cindy which will keep her out of action for a few weeks.

Graham and Sue won one set, but this wasn’t enough to lighten the gloom around the team.

* The ladies’ veterans first team beat top team Gynsill 5-3, but still need to accumulate points from their last two difficult fixtures to ensure their place in Group Two next season.

Penny Hallam and Margaret Heggs, took a maximum four sets, while Lesley Greaves and Rosie Gildove took the crucial fifth set.

* The ladies’ veterans third team of Pat Woolston and Maggie Saunders, and Jo Draper-Moore with Suzan Galloway lost 6-2 to Melton Mowbray first team in a match of many long and closely-contested rallies.

Pat and Maggie won two sets to complete their fixtures for the season.
