Hamilton Tennis Club: Doug and Margaret retain veterans' title

Hamilton Tennis Club Championships are drawing to a close and in the veterans' mixed final Doug Hacking and Margaret Heggs retained their title with a 6-2, 6-4 win over Selwyn Carter and Margaret Shufflebotham.

In the semi-finals, Doug and Margaret beat Steve Thompson and Jackie Thompson, while Selwyn and Margaret saw off Nigel Crymble and Jill Woods.

* On the league scene, several matches were postponed because of rain, but the men’s first team maintained their successful season with an 8-0 win over Stoney Stanton to go second in Group One.

Scores: Jack Elliss/Justin Horobin W 7-5, 7-6; W 6-2, 6-1. Ryan Parmar/Tom Elliss W 6-3, 6-2; W 7-5, 6-2.

* The men’s fourth team defeated Newtown Linford Thirds 7-1 with a maximum four sets for Will Harrison and Edwin Shufflebotham, and three for Barrie Farnsworth with Craig Tracey.

* The ladies’ fourth team won 6-2 against Loughborough Greenfields Seconds to unexpectedly take top spot in Group 10.

Jan and Jessi Jackson led the team with maximum four sets and were well supported by Nicky Herbert and Jo Draper-Moore with two sets.

* The men’s second team lost 6-2 to Gynsill with the two points coming from drawn matches by Ben Catlin and Joe Jackson.

* The ladies’ first team lost 8-0 to a strong Leicestershire A side.
