Greetham Valley golf: Ladies clinch last-gasp Mail on Sunday win

The hosts fell 2-0 behind after narrow defeats for Pat Jamieson and Angela Wheeler, but Irene Bastow, on her first Mail on Sunday debut, won 3 and 2 after a great birdie three on the ninth.

Gilly Grant drew Greetham level with a great 3 and 2 victory before Jill Cannings held her nerve to clinch match victory on the very last hole.

Only 20 hardy players braved the 45mph winds and driving rain on the Lakes course, but in spite of the conditions, scoring was remarkably consistent.

John Dowding won overall with 37 points to continue his run of scores in the high 30s.

His round included a birdie on the sixth, where playing into the wind required careful club selection, and double bogeys on the home run of 16 and 18.

Keith Smith took second place with 36 points on countback from Jack Vernal whose round was marred only by double bogeys on the back-to-back par fives of 15 and 16.
