Melton Golf Club: Lady Captain's Day, Greenhall Cup

All of the golfers were met on the first tee by the starter and former club member Bob Barnes whose wife was playing on the day.

Jean Moulds pipped Davina Adams to the honours in Division One on countback after both carded 33 points, but Jackie Fisher was the clear winner in Division Two as her 38-point score was four clear of closest challenger Sally Hudson.

The men’s overall winner was Kenneth McAuley who edged out club captain Glenn price on countback, both with 37 points.

Sandie closed the day by presenting a cheque to her nominated charity Dogs For Good.

* A strong field of 97 competitors turned out for another of the club’s prestigious trophies, the Greenhall Cup.

Playing a pairs stableford, the day started overcast but as temperatures rose, the drying fairways made the ball run much further.

The slight breeze was in favour on some holes, but the par fives played much longer into the breeze.

The pairing of Alan Sleath and Dave Timbrell won on countback with an excellent score of 45 points from runners-up Ray Catton and Stuart McNeill.

Neil Farish and Julienne Kisiel completed the top three, on countback, with another good score of 43 points.

* Melton GC’s B team travelled to Kilworth Springs hoping to maintain their winning ways and team captain Steve Wright was not disappointed as they came away three-and-a-half to one-and-a-half winners.

A few matches could have gone either way, but Melton dug deep and overcame experienced opponents on a course recovering from the hot weather .

Both teams played some very good golf, and Melton’s points came from Duncan Bagshaw and Andy Blunt (won 2 and 1), Billy Kevan and Richard Grieve (won 5 and 3), John Harvey and Bill Hurrell (halved), and Neil Eaves with Steve Wright (won 3 and 2).

* Melton’s C team knew they were in for a hard match against Sleaford who are a formidable team on home soil.

And on a course in excellent condition, with greens unaffected by the hot weather, Sleaford came out on top with by four-and-a-half points to one-and-a-half.

But the scoreline did not reflect how hard-fought the matches were, with club captain Glenn Price and Andy Pedlar losing on the last green when a long putt just lipped out to give their opponents a 1-up win.

Colin Kitchen and Steve Tagg produced an exhibition of golf to seal an amazing 7 and 6 win, while team captain Adrian Green and Mark Lewis fought hard to stay in touch with their opponents and returned with a very creditable half.

* Melton seniors fought hard against a strong and experienced Humberstone side to earn themselves a very creditable 3-3 away draw.

Melton’s winners were Haydn Snow and Nick McDonald (2 and 1), David Wells and Julian Kisiel (4 and 3), and Bob Luke and Jim Shaw (3 and 2).
