Former Tigers get their claws into Melton Mowbray GC rivals

The annual match between Melton Mowbray Golf Club and Leicester Tigers Past Players took place on Sunday - with the rugby aces claiming victory.

The players met for a pre-match photo and the scene was set as the usual banter could be heard from the onset.

The players teed off in lovely sunshine and, although there was no post-match meal, because of Covid restrictions, refreshments were provided at the halfway house.

It was obvious the Tigers were out to turn the tables on Melton Mowbray following last year’s result.

The player of the day was George Chuter, a former Tigers hooker, who had a purple patch during his round to cement the Tigers’ pairing win.

The Tigers were the overall winners, succeeding 4 1/2 to 1 1/2.

Both team captains, Gerry Stephens and Phil Smith, thanked everyone for supporting this fixture and especially Chris Stephens, who supplied all the refreshments.

Chris was ably assisted in the halfway house by Lady Captain Jackie Fisher.

Nearest the pin on the par 3 seventh was Mark Powell of the Tigers.

Melton Mowbray GC’s Dave Wells was nearest the pin on the par three 14th.

A strong field turned out to support Melton Mowbray Golf Club Seniors Captain Pat Lee’s day.

Ray Catton was the overall winner and also took nearest the pin as an individual stableford off full handicap format was used.

A cold wind greeted Saturday Stableford, which saw 126 entrants for the ninth Sprint to Woodhall Spa competition.
