Melton Town relegation fears worsen after hammering at Ashby Ivanhoe

Melton Town were comprehensively beaten 5-1 by fellow UCL Premier North strugglers Ashby Ivanhoe last night in a result that deepens their relegation concerns.

The visitors made a bright start and almost stunned the hosts inside the opening minute when Jack Butterfill turned smartly on the edge of the area and fired just wide.

Theo Sackey-Mensah then forced a scrambling save with a long-range volley as Melton threatened an early breakthrough.

However, Ashby soon asserted control. Jake Alley was called into action to deny Will Robson before George Clark’s diving header was tipped around the post.

From the resulting corner, Tyler Donaldson headed the hosts into the lead from close range.

Ashby doubled their advantage after 15 minutes when Ben Gough’s free kick from the edge of the area beat Alley for pace.

The game was effectively settled just three minutes later as Robson curled a superb 25-yard effort into the top corner to make it 3–0.

Melton struggled to respond, with Alley required to sweep up when Clark went clear on goal, while opportunities at the other end became increasingly scarce.

Ashby continued to control proceedings after the break as Harry Landowne headed narrowly over from a corner, while Zak Hill tested Alley from distance.

Melton’s afternoon worsened when Tom Wakley was sin-binned following a disputed incident involving Edwards-John.

Although initially penalised for simulation, Edwards-John was awarded a penalty moments later, but Khalis Gore’s weak effort was comfortably saved by Adam Binks.

Any lingering hopes of a comeback were extinguished almost immediately.

A partially cleared corner fell to Matt Moffatt, who drove home emphatically to extend Ashby’s lead.

Melton did grab a late consolation when Jordan Wakeling glanced in a header from a corner in the 86th minute, but Ashby had the final word as Kiarhys Svarc raced clear and finished calmly to complete a dominant victory.

The defeat leaves Melton firmly in the relegation picture, with a crucial trip to AFC Mansfield looming this weekend as they look to revive their faltering campaign.
