Holwell Sports chairman Graham Lewin wants to avoid another null and void season in the United Counties League Division One.

However, he believes that any promotion and relegation must be done fairly.

Action is currently on hold once more due to the national lockdown, with Sports having played just 11 of their 38 scheduled contests.

It has been suggested that the campaign could be concluded via points per game or by each side playing rivals once instead of twice, creating a much shorter season.

"Like every, club it's very frustrating for us," Mr Lewin said.

"I'd like a conclusion one way or the other. "You look at teams like Long Buckby and Melton, who were up there last season, they're up there this season.

"In all fairness to them, they deserve to get promoted. I do feel for them.

"We're all ambitious and want to do well, but when they've been up there for quite a while, they don't want another kick up the backside to be told they have to start all over again."

The FA are keen to finalise the season so they can carry out their restructuring of the non-league pyramid.

If points per game was to be the method that determined promotion and relegation then Mr Lewin believes more matches must be played.

At present, three of the bottom four have played just 11 matches. And Mr Lewin says it would not be fair to relegate a club who has played less than a third of their scheduled contests.

"You can't do that," he said.

"What I am concerned about is that they're talking about restructuring the league, which they were going to do last season, and if we don't get a full season in again are we going to cancel that again? I just don't know."

The stop-star nature to the campaign is also causing problems for Sports off the pitch.

While Mr Lewin says the club has no immediate financial worries, he knows they must remain prudent.

"It's just not knowing all the time," he said.

"If Neil (Miller, manager) came to me and said he did wanted to sign a player as he's one for the future, I'm saying I can't promise anything because we don't know what's happening.

"It's harder being the chairman than it used to be being the manager; but we do it, the committee, because we absolutely love it."

Melton Town President Sam Ellis has also called for the season to be finalised.
