An historic afternoon saw Melton Town make the first round proper of The FA Vase for the first time following an 8-1 victory over Birstall United.

Melton came out of the blocks trying to put behind them their last home defeat just four days earlier.

A clever free kick by Lever in the fourth minute saw him touch it to Dunn, whose powerful shot had Doherty making a great save to keep it out.

Just two minutes later and the deadlock was broken.

Munton received the ball in the centre circle.

He, in turn, sprayed a lovely ball out wide to Storey, whose low cross was touched into the net by Hammond.

Three minutes later and a run down the line by Harris saw him beat Phillips for speed and he pulled the ball back for Munton to find the bottom corner from 20 yards out.

The visitors halved the deficit when some poor defending let in Pallett and he chipped the keeper.

Munton nearly restored the two-goal lead straight from the kick off but his close range shot went inches over the bar.

Sloppy play again from Melton handed a freekick to Birstall on the edge of the area.

Bibby managed to get the ball over the wall but it hit the post and rolled along the goalline.

Within 60 seconds and Bibby this time tried lobbing Peet from 20 yards out, but the keeper got a finger to it and again it ricocheted off the post.

Then on the half hour a miscontrolled pass by Munton fell kindly to Hammond as he hit the roof of the net with a rasping shot.

Melton had their fourth minutes later when some good build up play found Lever out wide and his low cross was touched in by Munton.

Bibby was unlucky for a third time when his free kick deflected off the wall and again hit the post.

Four minutes into the second half and it was 5-1.

Dunn sprayed the ball out wide to Storey and his low cross was touched in by Munton to complete his fourth hat-trick in five games.

Two minutes later and Lever floated in a corner where Munton got a deft touch with his head which flew into the roof of the net.

In the 65th minute Manship played a long ball over the Birstall defence and Harris ran onto it and calmly lobbed the oncoming Doherty.

The last goal of the game turned out to be the best when a Lever corner was cleared to Harris and from 30 yards out he half volleyed into the top corner.

The final action of the game fell to Potter who found himself unmarked in the Melton box but his shot was well saved by Peet.

Melton can now look forward to today's draw on Monday and hope for a home tie.
