Holwell Sports manager Neil Miller has backed the FA’s decision to halt the majority of the non-league campaign, citing safety first.

Speaking to the Times, Miller said he believes the health of those involved with the club and beyond was far more important than concluding the current campaign.

“From a personal point of view, I don’t think people realistically want football to be played at the moment,” he said.

“A football club is much more than the 11 people on the pitch.

“I look at our club - the chairman, my kit man, some of the people who take money on the gate - they’re all of an older generation.

“I’d rather this season was ended now and they were here to be able to watch us play next season then we continued and anyone was to fall ill.”

On Thursday the FA announced that football from steps three to seven would cease immediately and all results expunged.

Holwell currently sit 10th in the UCL Premier Division One, three points off eighth-placed Irchester United.

As it stood, the top eight would qualify for next season’s FA Cup.

And while Miller was sympathetic to sides who have now missed out on possible promotions, he says football is not the top priority at present.

“I respect what other people are saying,” Miller added.

“It’s terrible for the clubs who are playing for something, to have that taken away from them.

“But we could have been in a position to qualify for the FA Cup.

“But if you ask me, the health of the people at the club is more important than the FA Cup.”
