Melton Town made history today as they played their first ever round one game in The FA Vase, but the opposition doesn't come much harder than UCL Premier Division highfliers Shepshed Dynamo - who ran out 3-2 winners.

Melton got off to s blistering start with a goal after 41 seconds. The ball was played out wide to Lever who beat Egginton for pace and sent in a low cross which was met at the back of the six yard box by Beaver, who stuck the ball between keeper and post.

Minutes later the ball was played into the visitors' box and only cleared as far as Smith, who struck a great shot which needed Peet's feet to deflect the ball away.

Eight minutes on the clock and Melton doubled their lead with a repeat of the first.

A diagonal ball found Lever who again beat Egginton and sent in a low cross for Bomber to smash in at the back post.

In the 10th minute it should have been three when a Harris cross was met by Munton but White manged to get a boot to it.

Melton were too quick on the break and were pinning Shepshed back.

A Bucalossi corner found Munton unmarked but his resulting strike went inches over the bar.

Harris went on a mazy run and cut the ball back only to see his shot shave the post.

With the half coming to and end Shepshed started to exert a bit of pressure.

King had a shot from the edge of the area which had Peet at full stretch to palm the ball around the post.

Dunn dissected the defence with a pass which saw Munton one-on-one with the keeper, but White was out quick enough to block the shot.

Shepshed came out early for the second half, leaving no doubt that the halftime team talk was less than complimentary.

Two minutes in and a long cross was headed on by Fray to King whose volley went agonisingly just over the bar.

Shepshed were now starting to dominate but Melton were the more dangerous on the break.

With 51 minutes gone a long ball found Munton, who touched it on to Harris who was one-on-one with the keeper who yet again he came to the rescue with his boot.

Clayton had a shot from inside the box for the hosts which went inches wide and Harris again found himself one-on-one with White but his shot was well blocked by the retreating Betts.

A minute later and the ball was cut out in midfield by Manship. He played it to Dunn who hooked the ball on to Munton who was clear on goal, but he dragged his shot wide.

Then against the run of play Shepshed got one back.

A corner found Niall Prenderville, who grew up in Melton, unmarked and his strong header found the corner of the net.

Two minutes later and Munton was one on one again, White saving the initial shot which went 20 yards to Harris who chipped the ball towards the open net, Betts managed to get back just in time to head the ball off the line.

With 15 minutes to go the hosts drew level, Clayton charging down the line and putting in a high cross which was only partially cleared back to Clayton.

His second cross found Canavan unmarked and his header again found the corner of the net.

The comeback was complete with eight minutes to go when a corner was nodded in by Canavan at the near post after the keeper appeared to be pushed.

There can be no complaints at the scoreline as Melton should really have been further ahead, especially after dominating the first half.

Melton return to action on Tuesday as they host Saffron Dynamo (KO 7.45pm).

TOWN: Peet, Atorey (Benjamin), Beaver, Bucalossi (Parsons), Gilchrist, Fray, Lever, Manship (Astill), Munton, Dunn, Harris.

Holwell Sports were beaten 3-1 at Birstall United, Aaron Black grabbing the consolation.

They host Bourne Town on Tuesday (KO 7.30pm).
