Burke bids to cement Scotland place in Wembley showdown

Ollie Burke could feature in his most high profile match to date when his Scotland side take on the Auld Enemy England at Wembley tomorrow (Friday) evening.

The 19-year-old, who was born north of the border in Kirkcaldy, but has spent most of his life in Melton, is in the Scotland squad for the World Cup qualifier and could make his fifth appearance for the national side.

Burke was dropped for the most recent qualifier in Slovakia, havign started against Lithuania just days earlier, but has been a regular name in Gordon Strachan’s squads since his first call-up in March.

Burke said: “I was very disappointed not being a part of that squad and sitting watching the game wasn’t the greatest of things for me.

“I will admit I wasn’t happy but, at the end of the day, if that’s what Gordon thinks is right and he is happy with that decision then that is fine.

“I am still happy to be there and still happy to be part of the squad.

“Gordon has been brilliant with me. He got me into the squad and really helped me settle into the team nicely, but football is a winning game and these things happen.

The former Mowbray Rangers junior is currently getting to grips with life in Germany following his £13 million move from Nottingham Forest to Red Bull Leipzig in August.

The pacy winger has one goal and two assists for Leipzig who are joint top of the Bundesliga with powerhouses Bayern Munich in their first season since promotion.
