Asfordby Development travelled to Birstall Old Boys on the back of an upturn in form.

The Hoby Road outfit were a new team put together one week before the start of the league season and they have taken a bit of time to settle on a starting formation and pattern of play.

The signs didn’t look good when the Asfordby defence failed to track the run of the Birstall striker who was fortunate to see his mis-hit shot loop over keeper Reed into the net.

However, Asfordby showed character and determination and dominated the next period of play, with Rhys Hill twice going close for the visitors before latching on to a through ball from man of the match Watson to shoot low and hard past the Birstall stopper.

Ten minutes later, Asfordby added another when Watson was upended five yards outside the box and up stepped Josh Brown to score direct from the kick.

Then with minutes to go in the first half a long ball held up in the wind and Hill scored his second of the afternoon following a fortunate ricochet of the Birstall Keeper.

In the second half, Birstall had the benefit of the wind and the slope, but made little impression as Asfordby continued to push for a fourth goal.

With 20 minutes left a change of personal and shape for Birstall saw them change to hitting long target balls to their front man, unfortunately one of these caught out the Asfordby keeper and gave Birstall a route back into the game.

However, it was Asfordby who finished the game more strongly, going close through Hill, Brown and Watson.

Birstall had a player sent off in the dying minutes for an off the ball incident with the ever industrious Cochrane, but this had little effect on the game which ended 2-3 giving the young Asfordby team back to back wins.
