Melton target higher leagues after securing promotion

Melton Town CC have set their sights on going much higher up the Leicestershire and Rutland Cricket League after securing the Division 4 East title at the weekend.

Regular Lee Freer said: “Going up to Divison 3 gives us a base to go further and we feel we should be pushing to get at least to Division 2 and Division 1.”

The championship run-in turned into a bit of anti-climax with the final four fixtures not taking place due to bad weather and Saturday’s scheduled opponents, Thorpe Arnold 2nds, failing to raise a side.

That gave Melton the title although closest rivals Market Overton were beaten by nine runs by Illston Abbey.

Freer said: “We found out on Thursday night that Thorpe wouldn’t be able to field a team but we had to wait until Saturday when the league was notified.

“It was a bit of an anti-climax to be honest because it had been neck-and-neck with Market Overton up until the last few games.

“We have been top for the majority of the season so I think we deserve to win the title. It’s been a great season for us.”
