Win at Blackstones secures Melton Town's Premier North status after fine Easter

Melton Town completed a perfect Easter on Monday when a 2-0 win from the short trip to Blackstones was enough to secure their UCL Premier North future and make it six points out of six.

A second crucial fixture in the space of three days, with both sides coming into the match on the back of victories, the stakes were high.

Melton required just a point to secure their Step 5 status, while Blackstones sat precariously just above the relegation zone.

Melton began the contest brightly and took a deserved lead in the sixth minute.

Andre Williams produced an excellent run, weaving his way through the defence before appearing to run out of space near the corner.

Showing great awareness, he picked out Toby Fura, whose clever outside-of-the-foot delivery into the six-yard box found Jack Butterfill, who calmly converted past Max Peverell.

The early goal unsettled the hosts, who struggled to retain possession as Melton grew in confidence and control.

Fura then tested Peverell from distance, forcing a diving save, and Keenan King was denied on the rebound as the goalkeeper produced an impressive double stop.

Melton continued to threaten, and shortly after the half hour mark, Butterfill’s diagonal pass found Williams unmarked at the far post, but his effort flashed agonisingly across goal and narrowly wide.

Blackstones did offer moments of resistance, with Andy Irvine seeing a goal-bound effort blocked on the line by Kalis Gore following a corner from Will Bestwick.

Just before half-time, Melton nearly doubled their advantage when a partially cleared corner fell to Theo Sackey-Mensah, whose powerful strike was well saved by Peverell.

The visitors maintained their dominance after the break.

Substitute Kairo Edwards-John made an immediate impact, cutting inside and sending a curling effort inches wide.

Butterfill also threatened from a wide free-kick, forcing another solid save.

As the game entered its final stages, Melton continued to apply pressure.

Edwards-John saw a powerful strike pushed away, while Butterfill was twice denied by excellent goalkeeping after being set up by clever flicks from King and Edwards-John.

Melton’s persistence was finally rewarded in the closing moments.

A short corner routine between Fura and Edwards-John allowed the latter to glide past his marker before delivering a low ball into the six-yard area, where Dave Chapman was on hand to apply the finishing touch and seal a deserved 2–0 victory.

The result lifts Melton into mid-table and effectively secures their status at Step 5 for another season, while Blackstones are left facing renewed relegation concerns.

Melton conclude their campaign this weekend at home to Harrowby United, where they can now play under considerably less pressure.
