A real family affair in final of Melton Tennis Club's first Parent and Child tournament

Club Coach Di Burdett and chairman Justin Horobin could not hide their delight at the first holding of the Melton Tennis Club's first Parent and Child Tournament.

The club saw a total of 32 pairs competing, with many of the youngsters and their parents entering into their first-ever tournament.

After many exciting matches during the morning of the under 10s event using red or orange balls, Ethan and father Christian Davidson won through to the final where they were to meet Harrison and father Mark Culpan, who had battled through their side of the draw.

The final proved a close run affair with Harrison and Mark just proving the stronger to lift the Parent and Child shield.

The afternoon session for over 11s started out in bright sunshine, followed by high winds, rain and then bright blue skies and sunshine.

The parents and youngsters were not phased by any of these weather changes and simply, got on with playing.

With all groups once again being closely fought out, pride of place went to the Roberts family with James and father Nigel winning through to compete in the final against brother Ollie and uncle Neil Spencer.

When umpire Di Durdett blew her whistle for time, their was just one point separating the two teams, with James and Nigel coming out on top to take the shield.

Di was quick to praise all the assistance given by Sarah Culpan, Jo Drewe, Justin Horobin, Ryan Parmar and Bridget Ingle and a big thank you to all the parents and youngsters for making it such a super success.
