Young Melton police cadet volunteers celebrate winning prestigious award

A group of young Melton volunteers who have supported the police at a series of public events are celebrating after being given a prestigious award.

The Melton Mowbray Volunteer Police Cadet Unit, the first such team to be set up by the Leicestershire force, received the UNISON’S Cadet Unit of the Year accolade at the third annual Volunteers in Policing Awards.

The unit was formed last September and since then members have assisted officers at popular occasions such as Remembrance Day and the Christmas lights switch-on.

Their Cadet Leader, PCSO Ollie Wood, said: “Melton cadets are a fantastic group of young people to work with and I’m so proud of them for winning this award.

“Having such a dedicated, charming and strong cadet unit adds a meaningful resilience to the town, and inspires public confidence in Leicestershire Police.”

The efforts of the Melton unit and the other 17 award winners were praised by Leicestershire Police Chief Constable Simon Cole at the presentation evening at Leicester City FC’s King Power Stadium last night (Thursday).

He said: ““The support that local communities receive from our volunteers, special constables, chaplains and cadets is simply amazing.

“I was very proud to be able to join the Lord Lieutenant, Police and Crime Commissioner, Under Sheriffs and sponsors at Leicester City Football Club to say ‘thank you’.

“We have over 800 people who volunteer to support our communities and they contributed 114,000 hours in the last 12 months, which is fantastic.”

More than 500 volunteers and guests attended the event, to recognise the effort of the hundreds of people who volunteer for Leicestershire Police as specials, cadets, chaplains and police support volunteers, and scores of people applauded for their time and commitment.

The awards coincided with National Volunteers’ week, an annual celebration of volunteers across the country which highlights the excellent work they undertake and their contribution to communities.
