VIDEO AND GALLERY: Melton’s Weird Weather

BUSINESSES, schools and motorists were counting the cost after Melton borough was pelted with hailstones this afternoon.

The freak weather, accompanied by torrential frain and sheet lightning, struck at around 2pm and lasted, on and off, for about 90 minutes.

Flash floods were reported across the area, trees were brought down and reports came in about damage to cars and roofs.

Readers have been sending in their pictures and videos and here is a selection.

And this comment from Mary Burton, of Asfordby, was typical of the calls we received.

She said: “I couldn’t believe the size of the hailstones. My neighbour’s car, which is a sturdy 4x4, had dents in it from the impact of the ice.

“I had just got off the bus from Melton when the storm hit. “The bus driver turned to me and said ‘I bet you didn’t expect to have a boat ride home’.

“I have never seen water like it, it was gushing down the road.”
