'˜We must help small businesses' say Melton councillors after approving Scalford company's house plan

Councillors went against a planning officer's advice by approving plans for a house to be built in Scalford, enabling a long-standing local business to grow.

Melton Council’s planning committee was told on Thursday that the house, to be built on the west side of Eastwell Road, was essential to enable applicants C&C Plants to further develop their profitable business, which employs up to six people locally, as well as enhancing their site security.

A council officer had recommended to refuse to the plans, based on national planning policy framework guidance and a lack of supporting evidence provided by the applicants.

But councillors felt strongly that small businesses should be supported and instead voted in favour of approval.

Councillor Pru Chandler said: “We should be encouraging small businesses, whether they in the middle of the town or the countryside. This is a house which is necessary to support a business.”
