Residents to get a chance this week to name Melton's new partial bypass

Residents will on Friday get the chance to have a say on what name is given to Melton Mowbray’s new partial bypass, which is due to open to traffic next month.

The construction of the North East Melton Mowbray Distributor Road (NEMMDR), which will link the A606 Nottingham Road to the north with the A606 Burton Road south of the town, is almost complete.

And Leicestershire County Council has drawn up a shortlist of potential names for the 7.1km road, which is a single carriageway route connected by six new roundabouts.

The list will be revealed on Friday along with an online link for local people to select their preferred option ahead of the grand opening.

There will also be a couple of public engagement activities in the town where locals can make their choice in person.

A spokesperson for County Hall told the Melton Times: “Every option reflects an element of Melton’s history, landscape or identity.

“As well as taking part online, people will also be able to get involved in person at an upcoming pop-up event in the town centre and at the market on Tuesday April 21.”

It was hoped that the NEMMDR would be open by Easter but the county council announced last month that bad weather at the start of this year had set the opening back a few weeks.

Contractors, Galliford Try, are now carrying out the final jobs, including surfacing the road and installing road signs, in preparation for the opening of the £134M route.

Residents are invited to go online at leicestershire.gov.uk/have-your-say from Friday April 17.
