Melton man Steve Carpenter and his wife, Rosalyn, were just getting ready to cross Wilton Road, at the crossing near the Boyes store, when the incident happened just before 2pm.

Mr Carpenter said: “I heard high revs which I thought was odd before I looked up the road and saw the car mount the kerb. The woman driver had already passed out by this point before it crashed into the wall, clipping a male gentleman.”

Mr Carpenter, who previously served in the RAF for 23 years, and other passers-by rushed to the driver’s door of the Nissan Micra, trying to pull it open to help the unconscious woman.

He added: “My first reaction was to help the woman, who I’d say was aged in her forties or fifties.

“Instinct and training kicked in. I was running into flying debris. The glass in the driver’s door had shattered and I dived through that.

“The engine was smoking and my concern was to get her out and away from danger. I shouted for someone to get a fire extinguisher on the car. Once I realised the fire extinguisher had done its job I carried on talking to the woman, trying to get a response. I knew she was breathing by that point, she was just unconscious.”

Paramedics helped the woman out of the car. They were speaking to her for quite a while before they moved her and she was put on a stretcher. I don’t know about the man

Fire crews and paramedics were quickly at the scene. The woman driver was given first aid and paramedics treated the male pedestrian while firefighters made the vehicle safe. The air ambulance also attended the scene, landing in a nearby park.

The driver and the pedestrian were taken to hospital in two separate road ambulances and police closed Wilton Road in both directions while the vehicle was recovered. The road was still closed at the time of going to press. The area around the Boyes store was taped off while emergency services dealt with the incident.
