Key Melton bus service improved to make journeys quicker and more regular
Passengers who travel on a bus service which connects Melton Mowbray with Corby, via Oakham and Uppingham, can now enjoy quicker and more regular journeys.
The R1 bus service has been refreshed and improved by operator Bland’s following joint investment from Rutland County Council, Leicestershire County Council and North Northamptonshire Council through the government’s Local Authority Bus Grant funding (LABG).

Several improvements are aimed at making the service more reliable, easier to use and better suited to local travel needs.
The R1 now operates hourly, serving Melton Mowbray, Oakham, Uppingham, and Corby in each direction, improving consistency and making the timetable simpler for passengers.
To support the enhanced timetable the service is now operated using three buses instead of two, helping to improve reliability across the route.
Journey times to Melton have been improved, helping people travel more quickly into the town.
This includes better access to Melton market, as well as the shops, services and employment opportunities.
The buses also sport a fresh new ‘Rutlander’ design and interiors, improving the journey for passengers.
Residents will also benefit from new roadside information at bus stops, providing clearer details about services and timetables.
The R1 picks up and drops off on Windsor Street and outside Melton Vale Sixth Form College, in Melton, and in Whissendine and Langham. The journey from Melton to Oakham takes around 30 minutes.
Councillor Christine Wise, portfolio holder for transport, environment and communities at Rutland County Council, said: “The improvements to the R1 service show what can be achieved when councils work together with operators to support local bus services.
"More frequent buses, clearer information and faster journeys will make the service more useful for residents and help encourage more people to choose the bus.”
During December, Bland’s hosted a number of events across Rutland and Leicestershire to launch the new design of the buses and let residents know about the improvements to the service.
These were attended by local councillors and stakeholders, and gave residents an opportunity to find out more, ask questions and meet the drivers who will be keeping the service moving.
Councillor Chris McGiffen, executive member for highways and travel at North Northamptonshire Council said: “We’re proud of the partnership that has delivered these improvements to the R1 service between Corby, Uppingham, Oakham and Melton Mowbray.
"This is about improving connectivity for our residents.
"Whether they’re travelling to work, college, or meeting friends and family, the service will better meet local needs and helps keep our communities connected.”
The councils involved continue to work together to use Local Authority Bus Grant funding to support and improve local bus services, helping communities stay connected and supporting access to key destinations across the area.
Councillor Adam Tilbury, lead member for highways and transport at Leicestershire County Council, said: “We’re pleased we’ve been able to work with partners to help improve this service and help residents access key services more quickly and easily.”
Further details about the R1 service, including timetables and route information, are available from Bland’s and at bus stops along the route.
