Frustrated residents want flooding solution

FED-UP neighbours are calling for action to fix a flooding problem which they say has been causing misery for more than 40 years.

Last Thursday’s freak storm caused many roads in the borough to be flooded including Sapcote Drive in Melton where neighbours Carl Mead and Mervyn Jackson were among the victims.

As Carl’s video shows, water from the street gushed straight down their drives and into their garages.

Carl, who lives at number 29, said: “This is an ongoing problem we’ve had over the years and it causes a lot of stress. We’ve been trying to get someone to acknowledge there’s a problem and do something about it but we keep getting passed from pillar to post.

Severn Trent Water have said it isn’t their problem. Leicestershire County Council came out over a week ago to clean out the drains and put some sandbags down but this keeps happening all the time. When it rains we just get an influx of water coming down from both ends of the road.”

Next door neighbour Mervyn Jackson, who currently lets his property, said: “There’s obviously an inherent problem that isn’t being addressed. It happened three months ago as well. County highways have been out to clear the drains but the problem isn’t being solved.

“I don’t think anything will get done until a claim goes in.”

A County Hall spokeswoman said: “We’ve cleared out the road gullies but our investigations indicate that it’s the main storm sewer that’s not coping. We’ve therefore referred the matter to Severn Trent Water and await the outcome of their investigations.”

The Melton Times asked Severn Trent Water for a response but no-one was available for comment.
