Call for witnesses to fatal collisions in Melton area

Two men died at the scene when their vehicles collided on the A606 near Somerby on Friday night.

And in the early evening on Monday, another male driver lost his life on the B676 Saxby Road near Melton after his car was in collision with another vehicle.

Melton Highways Forum chairman, and county and borough councillor, Pam Posnett said: “It is very sad news to hear about these two accidents and our sympathies go out to all the families involved.”

She added that the sites of both incidents would be investigated by county council highways officials to see if any safety improvements can be made to those stretches of road.

The two drivers who died in the A606 crash were Jak Thomas Cooney (22), of Corby, and 64-year-old Andrew John Taylor, of Barrow upon Soar.

Mr Cooney was driving a blue Ford Mondeo and Mr Taylor a black Jaguar estate when the incident happened, at 10.45pm.

Three women and a man were taken to the Queen’s Medical Centre in Nottingham. One of the women, who was a passenger in the Jaguar, remains in a critical but stable condition.

The other three people injured are also in a stable condition.

An emergency response team from Magpas – doctor Andy Lindsay and paramedic Ashley Richardson – attended the collision at 11.41pm in a rapid response vehicle.

Leicestershire Police, Leicestershire Fire Service, East Midlands Ambulance Service’s hazardous area response team and East Midlands Immediate Care Scheme were also in attendance at the scene.

The collision took place about 150 metres to the east of Pickwell Road and Leicestershire Police would like to speak to anyone who saw either of the vehicles being driven beforehand, or the collision itself.

Monday’s collision involved a black Ford Fiesta and a silver Ford Mondeo at 6.40pm on Saxby Road, Melton, about 200m south of the junction with Brentingby.

The driver of the Ford Fiesta, who had not yet been named at the time of going to press, sustained serious injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene. The driver of the Ford Mondeo sustained minor injuries.

A spokesperson for Derbyshire, Leicestershire and Rutland Air Ambulance said: “We were alerted at 6.34pm and were at the scene by 6.50pm

“However, despite the best efforts of everyone attending, the patient was pronounced dead at the scene.”

The Fiesta was travelling along Saxby Road towards Melton and the Mondeo was travelling in the opposite direction when they were involved in the collision. The road was closed for several hours.

Anyone who was travelling along the B676 on Monday evening at the time of the incident and witnessed the collision or saw either vehicle beforehand is asked to contact Dc Alison Ide of Leicestershire Police on 101, quoting incident 592 of April 11.

* A motorcyclist who died after a collision on the A607 at Frisby last month has been named as Nigel Alexander (60), of Loughborough.

He sustained fatal injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene of the incident, which involved his Yamaha R1 and a Range Rover Evoque.

The driver of the Range Rover sustained minor injuries in the collision, which happened at 12.40pm on Friday, March 25, and was discharged from the Leicester Royal Infirmary after treatment.

Anyone who witnessed the collision is asked to contact Dc Ide on 101, quoting incident number 283 of March 25.
