“Two appliances from Melton originally mobilised, along with a technical rescue team.

“The first appliance on scene confirmed a dustbin lorry was on its side, completely blocking the road, but no persons were trapped.”

A Melton Borough Council spokesperson said: “At 12pm today, a vehicle operated by waste contractor, Biffa, was involved in an incident on the A607 Leicester Road, near the Frisby turn off, just outside Melton Mowbray.

“There were three waste operatives in the vehicle at the time, two were taken to Leicester Royal Infirmary as a precautionary measure and one has returned to the depot.

“The refuse collection vehicle is in the process of being recovered.

“No other vehicles were involved in the incident, an investigation is underway and we will have more information in due course.”

The A607 was closed for more than two hours, between Kirby Bellars and East Goscote, as firefighters stemmed a leak of oil from the stricken lorry and the vehicle was recovered.

Leicestershire Police confirmed the road was open again at 2.35pm.
