Tea and cake at Melton coffee mornings raises cash for Macmillan

Macmillan Cancer Support’s World’s Biggest Coffee Morning saw Melton workplaces, schools and charity supporters enjoying a drink and a slice of cake for a good cause.

Most events were held on Friday but others took place earlier or later in the week.

Among those backing the initiative were villagers at Grimston, who raised £1,525.04, residents at Asfordby, who raised £425 and Melton’s Tresillian House.

At St Francis Catholic Primary School the town’s mayor attended and mixed with staff, parents and children from Year 6, who were helping to serve cakes, run the tombola stall and sell books. More than £400 was raised. Cakes were being sold in the playground as parents picked up children in the afternoon, which all added to the total.

Estate agents Harrison Murray sold cakes in branch and collected £26 for the cause, while staff at Latham House raised £426.

Melton Borough Council got in on the act too, they hosted a staff bake-off competition and served cakes, which raised £333.10.

Regular Macmillan supporter Angela Hewson held a coffee morning at her house in Scalford, and Christina Swann hosted a coffee morning in her workplace Mexichem, to celebrate being three years cancer free. Colleagues helped her raise a total of £300.

Sweet treats were served to guests in the Rural Catering Centre at Brooksby Melton College. The coffee morning raised £111.51.

A fundraiser was held at St Mary’s Church which raised £340. The tables set out in the new servery area had to be added to to accommodate the growing numbers of people attending as the morning went on.
