A sheep was rescued by firefighters this morning (Monday) after falling into a disused canal at Kirby Bellars.

Two crews from Melton and two technical rescue vehicles based at Southern Station attended the scene after an alert was sounded at 9.15am.

The animal was found to be stuck in mud in the old canal on Washdyke Lane.

A spokesperson for Leicestershire Fire and Rescue Service said: “The sheep was rescued by technical rescue personnel in dry suits and it was returned back to the field with no apparent injuries.”
