Dental nurse Katie Pease (23) was driving to work on November 8 when she was involved in a head-on collision on Asfordby Road.

Fire crews from Melton and Birstall arrived on the scene to find Katie trapped in her car and badly injured.

They decided to remove the driver’s door so she could be treated by paramedics and she was then extricated from the vehicle and flown by air ambulance to Queen’s Medical Centre in Nottingham.

Katie had broken both thigh bones, as well as her collar bones and six ribs, shattered bones in a knee, an arm and a foot, as well as sustaining a collapsed lung.

On Tuesday she visited Melton Fire Station to thank crew members who had been there on that fateful day.

Wearing a brace on her knee and using crutches to walk, she said: “It’s been brilliant to talk to the fire crews.

“I can’t thank them enough for what they did for me.”

Katie remembers little about the accident, other than it being a cold, icy morning.

A four-by-four vehicle had skidded on a patch of ice and veered across the A6006 into the path of her smaller car.

“I don’t remember anything about it,” said Katie.

“I woke up after three days in the hospital because they had pumped me with so many drugs. I’ve had four or five operations so far and I have another couple to come.”

Katie, who was working as a locum at MyDentist in Asfordby Road at the time of the collision, won’t be fit enough to return to work until November.

She added: “My employers have been so supportive to me since it happened - they are the best company I have ever worked for.”

Katie’s mum, Georgina, accompanied her to the fire station. She said: “Katie was very badly injured and it was such a shock to us when it happened.

“We’ve really enjoyed meeting the crews and being able to say thank you to them.”

Melton firefighter Kev Henshaw recalled: “Katie was in a really bad way when we got to the scene.

“It’s great to see she is recovering now.”

His colleague Stuart Southern said: “Normally we don’t get to see people after we have finished with them so it is lovely to see Katie today and to see she is getting better.”
