Services across Leicestershire '˜will slide' without more cash

Leicestershire County Council is performing well and meeting its priorities but faces increasing pressure from continued funding cuts, a new report reveals.

The council’s latest annual performance report shows that it is performing well against comparable local authorities but predicts this will become harder to sustain, as cuts continue.

Deputy council leader Byron Rhodes said spending per head of population is £531, one of the lowest levels in the country. He addded: “But, without fairer funding and with five more years of cuts to come, it’s inevitable we’ll have to concentrate on a reduced number of services and performance targets and that others will start to slide.”

The report measures performance across a range of services and issues. It shows the council is doing well in providing high speed broadband and supporting more people to live independently. Areas to focus on include implementing spending plans and reducing road accidents and congestion.
