Melton to host debate on Britain's membership of the European Union

The public debate will feature four speakers - two for staying in the EU and two against - and will be chaired by an impartial chairman.

The event is being held in the Baptist Church on Leicester Road. It will be free for people to attend, with doors open from 6.30pm for a 7pm start. Refreshments will be available.

Speaking in favour of Britain leaving the EU will be Labour MP for Vauxhall Kate Hoey and Andrew Allison, head of campaigns at the Freedom Association and Better Off Out.

Speaking in favour of Britain staying in the EU will be former Liberal East Midlands MEP Bill Newton Dunn and Dr James Moore, lecturer in modern British social history at The University of Leicester.

The debate has been organised by the Rutland and Melton OUT campaign group. Group spokesman Chris Simpson said: “It’s a very balanced platform with four great guest speakers giving their views on a subject which is very much in the news at the moment and helping people to decide how they will vote in the referendum.”

The UK is set to have a referendum by the end of 2017 on whether or not to remain a member of the EU.
