The leader of Rutland County Council Roger Begy has died.

The council confirmed this morning (Monday, February 1) that Coun Begy, who had only recently been diagnosed with cancer, died at Leicester Royal Infirmary today (Monday, February 1).

In a statement, a council spokesman said: “His family would like to thank well-wishers for their messages of support throughout recent weeks and now ask for their privacy to be respected at this difficult time.

“A further statement will be issued confirming funeral arrangements and details of a memorial service in due course.

“The flags outside Rutland County Council’s offices will be flown at half-mast. 

“The thoughts of everyone at Rutland County Council are with Coun Begy’s family and loved ones at this extremely difficult time. He will be greatly missed.”

Leader of Leicestershire County Council Nick Rushton said in tribute: “Roger’s death is a very sad loss for local government. He was a good friend and colleague and we worked really well together.”

Coun Begy was the Conservative representative for the Greetham ward. He had been leader of the council since 2003.
