Council lives within means

MELTON Council’s draft accounts for 2011-12 show it has managed to balance its books and make savings on all council funds in financially challenging times.

The council has been hit by continuing reductions in income from areas such as investments and planning and building control added to a substantial loss of Government grant which is expected to shrink even more for at least the next two years.

Councillor Byron Rhodes, leader of Melton Council, said: “The council has carried out some very difficult adjustments to its working practices during the past year so it can live within its means. The future is very uncertain but Melton is better placed to cope than most.”
