The defibrillator – a portable device that delivers an electric shock to stop an irregular heart rhythm following cardiac arrest – was taken from a red kiosk on Burton Street.

Located just outside The Crown Inn pub, the AED was used in a rescue on October 12, but was not returned. To replace it would cost £850.

Martin Fagan, national secretary for the Community Heartbeat Trust, which is responsible for the piece of equipment, said: “We need to get the message across to people that whilst they hang onto the defib, it is being denied use by others – there may be a death as a result.”

The AED should be returned to either the cabinet, Crown Inn or Melton Police Station, or call The Community Heartbeat Trust on 0845 86 27739 to arrange collection.
