Petrol thieves are putting lives at risk

SATURDAY 10AM: Lives are being put in danger by thoughtless fuel thieves – Melton police and fire chiefs have warned.

Concerned police officers are investigating following a recent spate of apparent fuel thefts in the Bottesford area where thieves have made holes in the fuel tanks of cars, with petrol spilling out into the road in some instances.

Sergeant Lee Morris, of Melton police, said two of the apparent fuel thefts were reported in the last few days.

One of the incidents happened in Rectory Court, Rectory Lane, Bottesford, between 6pm on Thursday and 10.30am on Friday.

Someone made a hole in the fuel tank of a blue Ford Fiesta. Fuel spilled out onto the floor, but it was unknown if any had been stolen.

Sgt Morris said: "It's a bit of an emerging trend in Bottesford. We are investigating and treating it extremely seriously.

"What is being done is extremely dangerous. There could be a serious accident as a result of these crimes."

The local police beat team and Neighbourhood Watch are both aware of the incidents and have urged people to be vigilant and to report any suspicious activity.

Phil Batten, watch manager in charge of Melton Fire Station, said: "It's a very dangerous thing to do. I've heard they've been drilling holes in the tank.

"If they are drilling then it could create sparks and the fumes from the fuel could ignite. The consequences could be disastrous. The petrol tank could explode and cover them in petrol.

"I've also heard they have left fuel actually running out of vehicles. There are environmental issues as well. The fuel is going to get into the water course and the water table and that's also going to cause problems."

Anyone with information about these crimes should call Melton police on (0116) 222 2222 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555111.
