Tributes paid to popular Melton Mowbray man Dean

Tributes have been paid to popular Melton Mowbray man, Dean Durrance, after he sadly passed away on May 30.

Dean will be known to many local people for his involvement with football clubs in the Melton area in his younger years – he was a former goalkeeper for Melton Town FC for a number of years, amongst other teams.

He then later shared his talents with the younger generation through goalkeeping coaching.

Dean, who was 60, often featured in the Melton Times sports section in match reports.

He attended the old Sarson High School (now Sherard School) and the former King Edward VII School in the town before going on to work for two of the biggest local companies, Boulton and Paul, and Asfordby Storage and Haulage.

Dean also worked as a painter and decorator and enjoyed listening to music and playing golf in his spare time.

Nothing made him prouder than being a dad and grandad.

His daughter, Cassie, said: “Dad was so kind, always joking and good fun to be with. We’ve had a lot of heartfelt messages from his friends since he passed away.”

Dean lived on a narrow boat, called Lewis and Megan, in the Nottingham Castle Marina for 13 years until ill health led to him moving to a flat in Melton a few months ago.

A former narrowboat neighbour and friend of his, Richard Hayward, said: “He was popular and friendly and will be missed on the marina by those who knew him.”

A funeral service for Dean is at St Mary’s Church, in Melton, on Thursday June 18, at 1.30pm, followed by interment at Melton Mowbray cemetery.
