Swallowdale Primary School pupils learn about the harsh reality of World War Two

They discussed how the war started with their teachers and have been identifying which countries were involved using maps.

Year four teacher and assistant head Gail Edwards said: “Pupils have read the book ‘The Lion and the Unicorn,’ which is the story of an evacuee called Lenny. This has helped them imagine what it must have been like to be a child during the Blitz – we even received a letter from Lenny’s mum who was really worried about him so of course we wrote back.

“The children also created scenes of the Blitz using watercolours and silhouettes which are now on display in school.”

Recently, staff and pupils attended Beaumanor Hall, where they learnt about decoding and rationing. Time spent inside a real air-raid shelter also helped them imagine what it must have been like for people during the bombings.
