New book about Melton's WW1 territorials

Our Forgotten Debt, written by town historian Derek Simmonds, tells the story of the terror and the hardships suffered by 129 men from the borough after they marched into battle in 1914.

It uses multiple sources, including a first-hand battlefield journal, to tell their largely untold story and ensure their deeds are not forgotten.

The journal is unique in the way it identifies the boys by name, who they were, where they lived and the jobs they were doing before the war. It also describes the steady war of attrition, naming casualties, not just from Melton, but also Rutland and across the county.

The launch of the book is at Melton Carnegie Museum on Wednesday November 16, from 10am to 2pm. Admission and refreshments are free of charge and Derek will be on hand with a display of pictures and information.
