Nancy Bramall said she didn’t need presents but instead asked family members and friends to help her pay for a new outdoor classroom for Birch Wood Special School in the town.

Her family set up an online fundraising page and after just a few weeks it had pledges yesterday (Wednesday) of £1,947.

Abigail Bramall, Nancy’s granddaughter-in-law, told the Melton Times: “She is really overwhelmed by the generosity of people with how they have responded.

“She never expected to raise this much.

“The classroom will cost around £10,000 and if we can get £5,000 the school could apply for funding for the rest.”

Nancy was born in Wales but moved to Melton in her early 20s.

She was married to Cyril at Stapleford church - he passed away around 30 years ago.

The couple had a son, David, grandchildren, Clive and Jonathan, and four great-grandchildren.

Nancy, a keen member of Sandy Lane Methodist Church in Melton, lives independently in the town and has had family contact during lockdown.

Abigail added: “She would like to thank everyone who has sent her a card or has sent their best wishes for her 100th birthday.”
