Mother and daughtertake on 100-mile hike

A JUNIOR doctor and her 10-year-old daughter are hiking 100 miles around Leicestershire to raise money towards a new childrens’ cancer unit at Leicester Royal Infirmary.

Nicki and Maddy Lygo will set off from their village of Thorpe Satchville on Sunday, August 19 and aim to return eight days later having covered 12.5 miles per day on a trail called the Leicestershire Round.

At the end of each day’s hike they will sleep in a camper van generously donated by Kevin and Sally Deignan, who were complete strangers to Nicki until she approached Kevin by his camper in the countryside.

Maddy, a pupil at Gaddesby Primary School said: “I’m really excited but also a little bit nervous because 100 miles is a long way!”

When asked what she thinks will be the greatest challenge, she giggled: “Keeping mum calm in fields with horses and cows because she’s a bit scared of them! And having to wait for lunch.”

The pair will be supported by their family Matt (dad), two younger brothers Gabe and Nate and Nicki’s mum and mum-in-law, Barbara and Jean.
