More Macmillan coffee morning fun in Melton

Members of the local community and employees of Tarmac’s Barnstone Cement Works in Barnstone put their baking skills to good use and raised £600 for Macmillan.

A great selection of treats, including muffins, tea breads, pavlova, cupcakes, tray bakes, gin and tonic muffins, carrot cakes and pecan tarts, were served up at the event, which was attended by around 100 people.

Bottesford pub The Rutland Arms raised a fantastic £650. Organiser Annie Ashley said: “The event is always very well supported by our locals with donations for the tombola and homemade cakes.”

As part of the World’s Biggest Coffee Morning, students at MV16 baked sponge cakes to be crowned ‘best baker.’ They also held a cake sale at break time raising over £300.

One of the school’s dinner ladies also contributed £80 herself by taking part in the Macmillan OutRun.

Welby Lane Mission Church changed their usual monthly coffee morning into a special event to raise funds for Macmillan Cancer Support. It was well attended by visitors and church members who also made cakes and provided a quiz. A total of £154.50 was raised.

Volunteers at Grimston Village Hall raised £1,713 by selling refreshments, cakes , produce, guess the value of the cleaning hamper and Christmas cards.

A member of staff at Melton Library served sweet and savoury snacks at her event. Ann Frankham sold cheese scones, sausage rolls and cakes which raised £120 for Macmillan.

Other participants to hold coffee morning fundraisers included staff at Melton’s Towns Agriculture Ltd, who raised £27.50, Sage Cross Methodist Church Ladies Club, who raised £210 and The Welby Pub, who held a raffle and Brave The Shave fundrasier, which raised over £800.

Organisers who also held coffee morning events for Macmillan included residents in South Street, Scalford, Melton Rugby Club, Melton Foods, villagers at Sproxton Village Hall, Clare Wright of Old Dalby and Brenda Jackson of the Macmillan Cancer Support Group committee.

On Saturday, there will be a Macmillan coffee morning at Goadby Marwood Village Hall between 10am and 12noon, where tea, coffee and cake will be served and there will be a preserve stall, raffle and bring and buy.
