Melton Mowbray prepares for its annual weekend of nostalgia celebrations

Around 15,000 people enjoyed last year’s 1940s Melton Mowbray Weekend and organisers hope they will get a similar turnout for this year’s event on Saturday and Sunday.

The event will contain the usual mix of live music, fashions, re-enactments and displays from that wartime era, in the town parks and other locations around Melton.

A wide variety of vintage stands will be set up selling clothing and memorabilia in the parks and there will be lots of food and drink stalls.

Displays of classic cars plus old military and agricultural vehicles are expected to draw the crowds again while the bandstand with be the focal point for 1940s singers belting out songs from the era.

Nottingham Barracks will be bringing along a climbing wall, five military vehicles, a field gun and other equipment to show what the modern day armed forces have to offer.

St Mary’s Church will once again be hosting their popular 1940s fashion show and there will be plenty of family attractions, including a miniature steam train offering rides in Play Close Park.

It is hoped there will be a Spitfire flypast during the event. There will also be a display by Melton’s Polish community to illustrate the important part Poles played in the war effort.

Tickets are also on sale for a 1950s and 1960s music dance at the Stockyard on the Saturday night.

The event is free to attend but you can donate at www.gofundme.com/f/melton-mowbray-1940s-weekend to help the volunteer organising committee with the costs of putting it on again.
