Melton couple reminisce over diamond 60 years of wedlock

Margaret Whiley, 78, moved to The Amwell, a residential, nursing, palliative and respite care in Asfordby Road, when her husband Walter was no longer able to care for her at the family home.

Before that the couple were virtually inseparable after meeting when they were aged just 14 working picking peas in fields. They met when Walter jokingly stole Margaret’s bag of peas to put with his own, and it was love at first sight.

The couple married and went on to have three children Nicholas, Christopher and Anita.

“The secret to a happy marriage is communication and doing as I am told,” joked Walter. “But honestly the best thing that ever happened to me was meeting and marrying Margaret.”

Margaret said: “One of our happiest moments was when Walter took me to Cyprus to see where he had worked for the Armed Forces for our 40th wedding anniversary.”

The pair celebrated their Diamond Wedding anniversary with a party in the bistro at The Amwell with their family and friends including their eight grandchildren and four great grandchildren.

Tracy Heyes, care home manager at The Amwell, said: “We would just like to say a huge congratulations from everybody at The Amwell to Margaret and Walter on their 60th wedding anniversary. They are a fantastic couple and we wish them many more happy years together.”
