Melton couple launch new board game based on chats with friends

A Melton Mowbray couple have launched a new board game from an idea they came up with from chatting with friends.

Thousands of pounds in pledges are pouring in for a crowdfunding drive by Ross and Faye Spencer for WeDJ!, which challenges players to choose songs for different categories.

They sought interest from funders for the game on Kickstarter last week and were ‘absolutely delighted’ that it hit its initial funding goal in under 12 hours.

More pledges came in at the weekend after the couple showcased it to players at the UK Games Expo, at the NEC – it has now almost reached 200 per cent funding.

It has been quite an experience for Ross and Faye, who have three young children, setting up an independent board game company, called Spring Chicken Games.

Faye told the Melton Times: “WeDJ! is our very first product, so it’s been a huge adventure bringing it from an idea between friends around the fire pit to something people can now actually play.

“The idea started with a simple question: “What song would you pick for…?”

"Years of music debates, funny stories and shared memories eventually evolved into WeDJ! - it is a party game built around nostalgia, connection, and the songs that soundtrack our lives.”

The game challenges players to choose songs for different category prompts – coming up with the answers sparks debate, laughter and stories.

“It’s designed to bring people together through music, whether that’s friends, families, or different generations discovering each other’s favourite tracks,” explained Faye.

You can meet Ross and Faye on Saturday June 13 when the couple will be showcasing their new board game on a stall at Super Saturday in Melton Mowbray town centre.

Faye added: “The next step is finalising UK production based on our final pledge numbers, before moving into manufacturing with the aim of getting copies out to backers around September or October.

“As this is our first ever game, everyone backing WeDJ! is genuinely becoming part of our origin story and helping a Melton Mowbray idea become a real product in people’s homes across the world.
