Female footballers prepare for gruelling 36-hour fundraiser

A women’s football team in Melton Mowbray is taking on a gruelling fundraising challenge to fund new training kit and equipment.

The players of Melton Foxes FC Vixens will be pedalling static bikes for a total distance of 970km – the equivalent of cycling from Cornish town, Land’s End, to John O’Groats in Scotland – over a 36-hour period.

The fundraiser, over the weekend of April 25 and 26, takes place at the club’s MARS Sports Ground headquarters, in Saxby Road in the town, with the footballers working in pairs.

They hope to raise £750 and spectators are welcome to go along to cheer them on as they take it turns to get on the saddle.

Organiser of the event and team coach, Roz Culley, said: “As a new team, we are always looking for a way of getting extra funds.

"We came up with a number of suggestions but this one seemed to be a good place to start while we have a couple of weeks off from the games.

"It’s not going to be easy by any means but I know our team and they always just keep going and this will be a real example of their determination, hopefully raising some extra funds.”

The club has an end-of-season awards ceremony on May 22 and their annual charity football match on July 5, which this year is for Prostate Cancer UK.

New female players, aged 16 and over, are always welcome to join, regardless of ability and experience. Call team boss Rick Culley on 07305 278601 for details.
