A cream tea event at Melton Mowbray’s St John’s Roman Catholic Church raised nearly £600 towards the cost of an adjacent new church and community hall.

Visitors to the Memorial Garden at the Thorpe End church enjoyed scones, jam and cream, homemade cakes and cups of tea on a dry warm day.

It was organised by the Friends of St John’s Church, who are fundraising for the new hall.

Chair, Frances Levett, said: “There was much laughter and merriment as people tried their luck on the raffle and browsed the bric-a-brac stall, which had an amazing variety of goods on sale, from acrylic paintings by a local artist to good quality clothes.”

The historic church was open for the event and many people requested guided tours.

For the first time this year, the church itself housed a second hand book sale, which was very popular.

Members of the Friends of St John’s Church wish to express their thanks to the charity, Make Life Better, which sponsored the cream teas.

The day raised £583, which will all be given to the fund to build the church and community hall.

Plans and information for the hall were on display during the cream teas event, including an artist’s impression of the planned new building, which generated much interest and discussion.

On the new hall, Frances added: “Our new church and community hall is now getting close to starting, and people were interested to see what we are getting.

“It is going to be simple and beautiful.”
