In the interests of public safety, Melton’s firefighters feel they have been left with no choice but to make the decision. Instead, they intend to hand out donations privately.

Scott Smith, Melton firefighter and Trumpton treasurer, said: “We had a presentation night booked at Melton Rugby Club for April 17, however, with all that’s going on this has had to be cancelled.

“We won’t be rescheduling as we don’t know when this is all going to end.

“The successful applicants are now being contacted to collect their gifts from Trumpton from the door of the fire station, and we are having to allocate times for this to reduce people arriving together!

“This is not the way we wanted to do things or have ever had to do before. It seems such a shame, but everyone has been really understanding.

“We would like to thank all the volunteers for helping collect, the rugby club, who would let us use their function room, Sainsbury’s, Aldi, Morrisons and B&H Midland Services for letting us collect at their premises, and all of the generosity of the Melton public for their donations to make this all work.”
