Coronavirus: Melton leisure centres and Twinlakes all now closed

Waterfield Leisure Centre, Melton Sports Village and Twinlakes Theme Park, near the town, are all now closed in a bid to limit the spread of coronavirus (Covid-19).

Everyone Active, which operates the swimming baths and gyms for Melton Borough Council, said earlier in the week it was still considered safe to swim and that staff were thoroughly cleaning equipment and ensuring safety measures were in place for visitors and staff.

But Prime Minister Boris Johnson told all leisure centres to close in his daily update yesterday (Friday).

A statement from Everyone Active reads: “Following government guidance, we have closed all of our leisure centres with immediate effect as of Froiday.

“We wholeheartedly apologise for any inconvenience this may cause and hope that you will stand by us during this difficult time.

“Our doors will open once again as soon as possible.”

Twinlakes has also closed ‘with sadness’ shortly before its traditionally busy Easter holiday period and the company say it will support customers and employees during the closure period and respond to their concerns.

A statement from Twinlakes says: “In response to the current situation developing regarding Covid-19 and the most recent advice from the UK Government and Public Health England we confirm with sadness that Twinlakes and Wheelgate Park are now temporarily closed, until further notice.

“At this point in time we feel this is the only and correct course of action to take.

“We know this will be disappointing news, particularly to those who have planned a visit soon with us, but as a family run business the health and well-being of our team members and guests is, and always has been, our top priority and we hope you understand and support our decision to close.

“We were very much looking forward to welcoming you all to the parks and are saddened to be unable to do so, but we know that this is the right thing to do in the interest of public health. We want to thank our amazing team for their support during this uncertain time.”

Customers are being advised that any day tickets already bought would have an extended period added to them for when they need to be used and that annual passes will be extended for the amount of time the park is closed.

The statement adds: “We are supporting our dedicated teams on whom our closure will inevitably have an impact.

“We are expecting a very high number of enquiries in the days ahead and will help as many people as we can, communications may be delayed, but please bear with us while we try and reply to everyone.

“Please email us on [email protected] and [email protected] to ensure your query is logged and replied too.

“We thank all our guests for your continued support. We wish you all the best and we look forward to welcoming you back when we reopen. Stay safe!

“Thank you for your understanding.”
