There have now been 178 death of patients linked to coronavirus at Leicester hospitals, the NHS has confirmed.

The update released by University Hospitals of Leicester NHS Trust does not include those people who have died in care homes and in the community and who have tested positive for Covid-19.

A trust spokesperson said: “Sadly, we can confirm that 178 patients being cared for at our hospitals, and who had tested positive for COVID-19, have died.

“13 of those deaths were announced on Wednesday (April 22).

“The ages of the patients range between those in their 50s to those in their 90s.

“Our thoughts and condolences are with the families and friends of the patients at this very difficult and distressing time.”

Coronavirus patients across the county are all transferred to city hospitals for treatment.
