Celebrations as Melton retains coveted Purple Flag status

Melton town centre officials are celebrating after the town had its coveted Purple Flag status renewed to mark the quality of its evening and night-time economy, following its full renewal application and overnight assessment.

Melton was the first town in Leicestershire to be given the honour by the Association of Town and City Management (ATCM) in 2016 and was again successful in its interim renewal in 2017.

In August this year, as part of the full application, assessors visited the town centre between 5pm and 5am to look at cleanliness and safety, transport and car parking, its appeal to visitors and its diversity of facilities.

Councillor Malise Graham, chair of the Purple Flag Partnership and Safer Melton Partnership said: “It was a great honour and recognition of a lot of hard work that we were awarded the Purple Flag in the first place.

“The success of a renewal is the realisation by the organisers that we have in place the enthusiasm and the tools to build on that initial award for the benefit of all.”

Sgt Iain Wakelam, of Leicestershire Police said: “Being part of an extremely effective partnership, we are looking forward to consolidating our town’s Purple Flag status and continuing to improve things further in the future.”

Sarah Walker, Purple Flag programme manager at the ATCM said: “The award is not just about safety, but also the vibrancy and diversity of the evening and night-time offers in a town.”
