The Melton Mowbray Macmillan Cancer Support Committee will be presented with the Committee of the Year Award later this month, at a garden party organised to celebrate their achievements over 35 years.

Since their inception 35 years ago, the group have raised in excess of £800,000 for people affected by cancer and have made a big impact in the town. Over the years, the membership has changed but some today have over 20 years service.

Di Orson, chairman of the Melton Mowbray Macmillan Cancer Support Committee, said: “It was such a surprise when we learnt of our nomination, let alone our win. We’re very honoured to have been chosen, but we just enjoy doing our best and fundraising in so many ways, knowing it’s for such a worthy cause.”

Jo Anne Wilson, senior fundraising manager for Macmillan Cancer Support, said: ‘The group are strong ambassadors for Macmillan with a very driven can do attitude and strong fundraising approach. They’re normal people doing extraordinary things.

“From concerts, coffee mornings, village fetes and their famous annual sponsored horse ride at Belvoir Castle, if they can fit it in, sell it, make it, they will do their utmost to ensure that they’re using every opportunity to raise funds for Macmillan as well as awareness.”

Melton residents are invited to join the group to celebrate their achievements at Sysonby Knoll Hotel on Saturday, July 8, from 3-5pm. Tickets are £7.50 and include afternoon tea. For more details email Di at [email protected]
